Conrad’s twin brother died at birth, leaving him with the strange feeling that half of himself was missing. He talks to his absent brother, a habit that worries fellow villagers and paramore’s. Even now, he feels incomplete, seeking his other half in friendships and lovers that always disappoint and never fully satisfy.
Jakob is known as a leader amongst the village, thinking carefully before speaking and moving deliberately in all things. This sometimes earns mockery from impatient community, yet his methodical approach prevents mistakes that haste can cause; his measured words carry weight when he finally speaks. The village values his steady presence, though, young people still find his plodding pace maddening.
Claudine’s skill in herbalism and alchemy is unprecedented for a woman, learned from her father who had no sons to inherit this knowledge. She can create remedies and elixirs with equal skill, her draughts are sought throughout the region. Her unusual occupation challenges gender expectations but proved too valuable for the community to reject.
Mirabel likes to be in charge. From the time she was a small girl she new what needed to be done and who needed to do it, she has carried that way of thinking to her current role in the village. She has her eyes set on grander things, things beyond Greenwood.
Winnifred is a peacemaker with a gift for finding common ground between quarreling neighbors, helping them resolve disputes without violence or resentment. He speaks softly but with authority born from genuine care for community harmony. Lords from other villages sometimes called upon his services; his success has made him prosperous despite his humble origins.
Odette has a dark and exotic beauty to her, her skin is adorned with tattooed markings across her full figure. While she has been a productive member of the village for some time, her appearance has made her an outsider and slightly untrusted. The men and women folk of the village seem drawn to her but she has yet to show any interest.
Heinrich is strong but dim, he can outwork any two normal men but lacks the wit to bargain fairly for his labor. Shrewder neighbors take advantage of his simplicity, paying him poorly for valuable work. Village leaders protect him from the worst exploitation but worry about what happens when age steals his strength.
Sibyl has lost her entire family to plague in a single terrible winter, leaving her the sole survivor of a once-large household. She continues working their land alone, a solitary figure who rarely speaks but whose grief is palpable to all who see her. The village supports her with quiet kindness, understanding that her sorrow is too deep for comfort and that her mind holds together purely out of sense of duty.
Dietrich finds reasons to smile even in the darkest circumstances, his persistent optimism either inspires or irritates those around him, often with extreme reactions from his fellow villagers. He whistles while working, laughs at his own misfortunes, and finds goodness in the worst people. His relentless positivity sometimes masks deeper pain, but it also lifts spirits throughout the community.
Geoffrey never lets anyone forget that his grandfather had been a minor lord before the crusades, maintaining airs that his current circumstances cannot support. He dresses better than he can afford and speaks as if he still commands the respect his bloodline no longer guaranteed. His pretensions make him a figure of mockery, but also of some pity.
Karl is cautious, perhaps too cautious, he examines every decision from all angles before acting, a habit that prevented many mistakes but also misses numerous opportunities. He plans carefully for disasters that never come while failing to seize chances that slip away during his deliberations. His measured approach serves him well in his craft but poorly in his personal dealings.
Johanna is mad. Touched by something that crawls at the back of your thoughts, something the eyes cannot see. No one seems to remember when this happened to her only that one day after she returned from working near the standing stone she was changed. She now lives at the far edge of the village, howling at the summer sun and dancing among the stone.
