Klaus has somehow acquired the ability to understand the true intent of any document or book, a skill so rare in the village that it seemed almost magical. He treasures three strange books inherited from a dying traveller, which he keeps carefully hidden. His ability has made him invaluable when dealing with official documents, but also marked him as different and dangerous by Edward De Fitzroy.
Rose had studied with learned women in her youth, acquiring knowledge of reading, writing, arithmetic, and a variety of other subjects that were extraordinarily rare among village women. She serves as scribe for official documents and personal letters, charging modest fees that supplemented her income. Her literacy has made her invaluable but also set her apart from neighbors who viewed her abilities with mixture of respect and suspicion; her arrogance has also not helped that opinion.
Stefan seems touched by divine favor, everything he attempts succeeds beyond reasonable expectation. His fields yielded double harvests, his animals never sickened, and his family grows strong and beautiful. Other villagers waver between envy and awe, some attributing his luck to God’s grace while others whisper of darker bargains.
Catherine has not spoken since witnessing her family’s murder by raiders years ago, trauma has stolen her voice and sharpened her other senses. She communicates through gestures and expressions that are remarkably eloquent, her presence brings peace to troubled situations; her muteness has made her a repository for secrets, since she can hear confessions but never betray them.
No one remembers when Damian came to the village or if he was born there. He is loud and demanding, but has an uncanny way with the ladies… something seems off, and now the priests are becoming involved.
Yvonne is known for her silver tongue, able to talk her way out of trouble and into opportunities with remarkable consistency. She has negotiated better prices for the village’s grain and livestock, earning herself commissions that supplemented her income. Her persuasive abilities sometimes crossed into manipulation, making her effectiveness come at the cost of complete trustworthiness. Her natural presence has also made her sought after by local playwrights that need a lead, however, she has turned these down in favor of service to herself and the village.
Otto, known for his beautiful and booming voice, can make grown men weep during prayers and set hearts racing during harvest celebrations. He leads the village in songs, stories, and general merry making, his is the voice that brings the community together. Traveling priests and bards often asked him to join them and travel, however, he remains loyal to his humble home.
Frederick’s father died when he was seven, leaving him to care for his ailing mother and two younger sisters. He spent his youth gathering herbs in the forest, learning their properties from an old woman who lived alone near the standing stones. Now grown, he trades his knowledge for grain and meat, though some whisper he dabbles in darker arts. To assuage suspicion he has taken to fishing allowing for him to head off into the wilderness to gather with fewer questions.
Zara has always dreamed of an ideal marriage, planning each and every day with her betrothed… the reality however is far from the mind’s eye. Zara singular dedication to finding the ideal husband is what turns suiters aways as her constant affections are too much for anyone. As the saying goes, there is someone for everyone, so hope is not lost.
Victor ‘The Fury’ earned his name from his fiery hair and equally fiery temper, both inherited from his Irish grandmother. He can work iron like few others, but his rages make him dangerous to be around when the metal fights back. Three apprentices had fled his workshop, and his wife threatens to follow if he doesn’t learn to control his anger.
Franz’s mother died when he was born and his father blamed him for the loss, making his childhood a series of harsh lessons in survival. He learned to work hard and well, but also to expect little kindness from others. Though he isolates himself at home he fully intends to break the cycle of harshness through conscious effort.
Lambert originally hails from Scotland and is known to be an almost preternaturally gifted swordsman, often volunteering for military service. His motto: “Who wants to live forever?” He resides on the outskirts of town, supposedly awaiting a great gathering of warriors where he intends to prove, there can be only one!
